Funakoshi Shotokan has a grading system that allows all students to proceed through levels/grades, outlining their growth and development. Whilst it is not mandatory for students to go through the grading system, we have found it is a great way for both adults and children to have their progress recognised.
What Does “Grading” Mean?
The coloured belt gradings are like stepping stones on a path to a student reaching their black belt. To achieve the next belt the student needs to learn a new kata ( a set sequence of movements) and improve both their basics and their kumite (sparring). As the student works through the belts he/she needs to learn to be self-motivated, disciplined and improve their character.
