FSKA Karate Classes

Karate with a difference

Funakoshi Karate is an international Shotokan style of karate that is practiced in over 35 countries around the world. Head of F.S.K.A. is Shihan Kyle Funakoshi. Shihan Kyle has been training in Shotokan Karate for 39 years and currently instructs full time at the FSKA Headquarters in the USA.

We offer classes for beginners and all other kyu levels for children (6+ years), adults and woman only classes (coached by our female black belt instructors).

Students aged 6+ years will work towards grading for different colour belts. Every term students will follow a set syllabus and before being awarded their new colour belt they will need to be competent to pass the grading exam at the end of each term i.e. in March, July and December.
There will be a training session in the morning before each grading. This is a highlight for all students as they will be able to train with all of our instructors as well as meet students from our other venues from across SW London. Gradings are done outside classes on a Saturday at the end of each term. In December there is an annual prize giving.

FSKA
Uniforms

FSKA students may wear the traditional white karate gi (suit) to classes. Suits and further karate kit may be purchased through our office by emailing info@fskauk.co.uk with your requirements.
We encourage Students to participate in our in-house leagues as well as competitions outside our club. Please speak with your class instructors for more information.

We offer an apprenticeship scheme for our junior black belt students, where they may work as Sempais (assistants) to our senior black belt instructors to gain experience in teaching others so they too may have the experience and confidence to become Senseis (coaches) themselves one day.

Please also read about the history or Shotokan Karate here.

What happens during a class?

Our classes are taught by black belt instructors only and some senior instructors (Senseis) are assisted by our junior black belt students (Sempais).
Training is usually 1 hour or 1.5 hours long, depending on the day and class the student has decided to register for.
We offer a reduced fee structure for students attending more than one class a week /per term or more than 1 hours of karate per week/per term. Please enquire with our office for further details.

Students are taught a set syllabus for their gradings (exams) as well as kumite (sparring) techniques. Students will learn basic Japanese martial arts jargon during their training.
Classes start with a warm up and revision of what has been learnt previously and students then move onto learning their kata (sequence of movements) for their kyu (belt) grade at the end of the term.
Classes are structured in such a way that students may join the club at any time during a term.
Classes are term time only.
